What music should you choose for your wedding video?

It’s a question couples ask us a lot – what music should I have in my wedding video?!

Here at Filmed On Phones, we believe your wedding video should be as personal to you as possible, and that’s why we let you choose the music for your special day. But that does leave you with some thinking to do.

What kind of music is best?

You want your wedding video music to be personal, so the best kind of music is… music that you like! The music plays a HUGE role (seriously, we can’t understate this) in determining the overall ‘feel’ of your video. Coldplay gives a very different vibe to… Macklemore.

Sometimes it works really well to have a mixture of genres – perhaps a slow, romantic song to start the video, and an upbeat party song to end it.

Does the meaning of the song matter?

This is a debatable one. You probably don’t want a song that’s about divorce. It can be good to stick to songs about love – and not difficult, almost every song is – but a lot of the time if you really dig into the lyrics and the meaning behind the song you can find they’re not a lovey-dovey as you might have hoped.

A great resource for finding out song meanings and digging into the lyrics, is Genius. It allows users to annotate lyric lines with comments about the meanings.

However, we would argue if the song gives you a good feeling, don’t stress too much about the exact meaning of the lyrics.

How many songs should I choose?

If you’re using one of our packages, the answer is simple:

  • Mini Highlights: 1 song
  • Classic Highlights: 2 songs
  • Extended Highlights: 3 songs

Can I use any song in my video?

Music in wedding videos needs to be properly licensed to stay on the right side of the law. If unlicensed music is used, you’re likely to run into problems if you try and post the video anywhere online, and regardless, your videographer is breaking copyright law if they provide a video with unlicensed songs.

Fortunately, here at Filmed On Phones we have access to a large music library of popular songs that we have licenses for. Head over to our Music page to browse through our Spotify playlist, which features songs from Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay, Aretha Franklin, Green Day, Muse, Keane, Ben Howard, Paolo Nutini, S Club 7, Bruno Mars, Bastille, Take That and many many more!

Do I have to choose the music myself?

No! If you don’t actually want the responsibility of choosing your music and you’d rather entrust us with that, that’s no problem.

We will carefully review your wedding clips, and consider the songs used at your wedding, for example in your first dance, walking up the aisle and the party. Based on this music, we’ll make an educated guess at the kind of thing you’ll like, that will also fit well in your wedding video.

What’s next?

At some point after you’ve booked with us, we’ll ask you to complete a Pre-Wedding form. This includes a question about your music choices, so simply let us know what you’d like in that box. If you’re still considering a “shoot it yourself” style video, we have plenty of guidance on our blog that might help you out.
